Thank you all for attending Wednesday evening’s Cherry Blossom Giving Circle community celebration! We hope you enjoyed the evening through networking with others in the AAPI DC community, learning more about the giving circle, and most importantly, celebrating this year’s giving circle grantees — the Dana Tai Soon Burgess & Co Dance Company, and DC Language Access Coalition and its DC Nail Salon Project! The giving circle is very pleased to be making grants of $3,500 to each organization in support of their programs to outreach to the local AAPI community.

Members and friends of the Cherry Blossom Giving Circle are invited to attend a learning and networking opportunity on Tuesday, June 28, from 6:00 – 7:30pm. Over some light refreshments, we’ll have a chance to meet each other and hear about the state of the local AAPI community.

The Cherry Blossom Giving Circle is pleased to announce the next giving circle event on Tuesday, June 28. Location and time TBD. We’ll hear updates from several past giving circle grantees on the state of Asian Americans in the local community, and have a chance to meet AAPIP national’s new Director of Community Philanthropy, Noelle Ito, who will be visiting us from NYC.

We’ll also share more about this year’s proposal selection process, which will kickoff in July. From July to October, giving circle members will have the opportunity to be part of the review process, and have input into this year’s giving circle grantees. It will involve several steps over the several months:

- Identifying key grantee criteria
- Issuing a request for proposal
- Collecting the proposals
- Reviewing proposals
- Conducting site visits and/or interviews
- Sharing information with the giving circle members
- Making the decisions
- Informing the grantees and the broader giving circle community through a reception

We’ll hold a giving circle networking reception in October to announce this year’s grantees!

Cherry Blossom Festival Walk

Asian Americans are the Fastest-Growing Population in Washington, D.C.

From the D.C. Mayor’s Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs:

The 2010 United States Census data, released last week, indicates the Asian population grew 38.6% between 2000 and 2010, in the District of Columbia. The total population rose to 21,056 equaling 3.5% of the entire population and making it the fastest growing community. The District’s total Asian American and Pacific Islander (APIA) populations grew 37.5% from 2000 to 2010, totaling 21,358 equaling 3.6% of the city’s entire population.

This rapid growth rate in the APIA population was followed by an increasing White population growth at 31.4%, and Hispanic population at 21.8% growth. Nationally the APIA population grew by 43% from 2000 to 2010 totaling 15,214,265 making it the fastest-growing national population

Most of the District’s Asian residents live in Ward 2 (6,942) followed by Ward 3 (5,146), Ward 6 (3,161), Ward 1 (3,156), Ward 4 (1,218), Ward 5 (1,037), Ward 8 (260), and Ward 7 (136). Asian residents made up 9% of Ward 2 and 7% of Ward 3. The percent of DC’s Asians living in Ward 6 nearly doubled over 10 years from 2.5% in 2000 to 4.2% in 2010. There were increases in the percentage of Asians living in six out of the eight wards with Ward 7 and Ward 8 experiencing modest decreases.

“We are excited about the new data released by the US Census Bureau and believe it provides a great overview of Asian residents in the District of Columbia,” said Soohyun “Julie” Koo, Director of the Mayor’s Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs.

OAPIA recognizes that this data may have undercounting issues but believes it is committed to providing data that can lead to a better understanding and appreciation of the Asian residents in the District of Columbia.

“Giving circles fill a community gap, by supporting the high-impact but small nonprofits that don’t have their own marketing or grant-writing resources. Whether they can publicize these nonprofits to attract a donor or offer their own financial gift, giving circles can raise a nonprofits’ profile. Some giving circles, serve as a mini community foundation by helping givers direct their funds toward a cause that resonates with them. Or, a giving circle could have an emergency network where members can decide to use their personal funds to help others in an emergency.”
